The Podersdorf Windmill

In mountainous Austria, mills generally worked with the power of water. But in the flat parts of the country – for example, in Burgenland – there was a lack of powerful brooks.

Therefore windmills were common in this part of Austria. Today, only two of them are still operable. One of them you find in Podersdorf. It was first mentioned in 1820.

In 1849 the new owner replaced the older building with a new windmill made of stone. The building material came from the St. Margarethen Quarry, a stone pit dating back to the ancient Romans.

Today the Association for the Preservation of the Podersdorf Windmill offers guided tours and explains how such a windmill worked in earlier times. By the way, the second still operable Austrian windmill stands in the region of Weinviertel: Retz Windmill.
