Right below Udine Castle, you find the Piazza Libertà. The Loggia del Lionello and the Loggia di San Giovanni frame the oldest square of Udine. Its main attraction is the Torre dell’Orologio, a clock tower resembling that one on the Piazza San Marco in Venice.
A museum with intriguing architecture forms the Museum of Natural History known as Ottoneum. Inside, it offers goodies like a Xylotheque and the Ratzenberger Herbarium. Another attraction is the Goethe Elephant Skeleton.
The Linzergasse is, after the Getreidegasse, the second most famous shopping street in Salzburg. In the past, several gates secured this access lane. Today, the Linzertor Mural reminds pedestrians of one of these gates named Linzertor.
This steam locomotive NkNb 1-3 dates back to 1882. You find it on the grounds of the Transport Museum of Budapest. First, the locomotive served on the Nagykikinda–Nagybecskerek railroad. Later, it ran as an industrial locomotive in Budapest.
The Gorch Fock I dates back to 1933. Before WWII, it served as a school ship for the German Reichsmarine. Today, it is a museum ship in Stralsund. Its name refers to the author Johann Wilhelm Kinau, who used the pseudonym Gorch Fock for his works.
In addition to many cosy rooms, the Hotel Tauernstüberl offers a number of apartments with a gallery. You find the hotel not far from the famous narrow-gauge Pinzgau Railway. This railway transports the hotel guests to the Krimml Waterfalls on the spot.
This sundial in Merano impresses with a lot of details and codes. For example, you see the motto of Frederick III (A.E.I.O.U.). There is also a memento mori formed by a skull and an hourglass on top of it.
The Chiemsee Railway (Chiemseebahn) was opened in 1887. Though it doesn’t exactly meet the definition of a tramway, it is considered the oldest steam tramway in the world still in use. It connects Prien Railway Station with Prien Port on the Chiemsee.
This pic is a view from the roof of the Stahlwelt. The Stahlwelt is an exhibition hall promoting products made of steel. The small hill in the middle reminds me of the Erzberg, a mining area for ore in the Austrian state of Styria.
This tilting train runs as SŽ series 310 for the Slovenian Railways (Slovenske železnice). It saw its construction by FIAT Ferroviaria and is a derivation of their ETR 460. The photo shows the train on a track in Maribor Central Station.
Ehrenburg Palace (Schloss Ehrenburg) was the residential palace of the dukes of Saxe-Coburg until 1918. Its present façade in the English Gothic Revival style is a work by Karl Friedrich Schinkel at the beginning of the 19th century.
In earlier times, this guard tower served on the Hungarian side of the Iron Curtain. Today, it stands on the Austrian side in the state of Burgenland. By climbing half the tower, people have a nice view of the scenery.
