In earlier times German miners used to have a small garden for vegetable and animals behind their homes. While strolling around a mining settlement next to the colliery Zeche Zollern I came across this special breed of chickens. In German they are called Sundheimer.

Every year another interesting art project takes place at the Gasometer (a former gas holder) in Oberhausen. In 2013 I visited the ‘Big Air Package’ created by Christo. This time the artist, who is generally known for wrapping huge things, produced a kind of balloon filling the inside of the gas holder.

On my night stroll through the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord, an industrial heritage park in Ruhr area, I came across this torpedo car. These cars are used for hauling molten pig iron from the blast furnace to the next processing unit.

The Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord is actually the area of a former iron works. It is open for public and people are allowed to walk on the grounds of the iron works all the day long. Even at night!

The restaurant Hauptschalthaus is located in the former control centre of an ironworks in Duisburg. The main attraction of the restaurant is the dining area in front of some huge insulators. Through the big windows, one also has a good view of the ironworks situated at the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord.

This notice made me smile. Literally translated it says: ‘This escalator has been disabled for reasons of safety’. I do hope they will be able to modernise this escalator soon.

Palais Ferstl is a palace in the first district of Vienna. It was built in 1859 and was never the residence of a noble family. Today it houses a lot of exclusive shops and a famous café named Café Central.

Main entrance of the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera) some hours before the famous Wiener Opernball (Vienna Opera Ball) takes place. More…

Every year a large skating rink in front of the Viennese city hall is a big attraction for the people of Vienna. The ice rink extends not only in front of the neo-Gothic building but also at the park nearby named Rathauspark.

My contribution to #FriFotos of today. The topic is #shadow. My shadow is standing on an artwork created by the Austrian artist Eva Schlegel. The artwork is located at the soil in front of the Austrian Präsidentschaftskanzlei in Vienna.
